I have this thing I do every time Valentine's rolls around.
It's not that I don't love the holiday. Or that I'm a grinch that wants to ruin Valentine's. Nope, it's far from that.
But every time the season rolls around and we get customers who come to the store and chat with us about finding the perfect lingerie set that will "wow my bf", I find this feeling surge in my belly and this need to start writing my Valentine's message.
And my message is to you.
Lingerie is a huge part of Valentine's. The same way chocolates and flowers are. Men buy them for women to show affection and Valentine's is all about that. In return, some women choose to spice things up in the bedroom. Try out lingerie styles that aren't really their usual cup of tea. To bring romance up a notch on this one day in a year.
That's where the reminder comes in.
As much as men mostly buy flowers to please women (or their partners), you should only buy lingerie to please....*drumrolls* yourself.
Don't do things you don't want to do just because you want to make someone else happy. Yes, your partner is a huge part of your life. To some of you, the most important person in your life. Which is great.
But lingerie has always had a deep connection with sex, self esteem and comfort. While you're out there shopping for lingerie, perfume, booking a nice location for a staycation, making sure restaurants are reserved for a dinner date, we also want you to remember that you are the most important person in your life.
Try out a new style. Maybe ditch the regular bralettes you've been wearing for a camisole design that's equal parts comfy and sexy. But do it for yourself. Do it because it makes you feel powerful, confident and beautiful. Do it because stepping out of your own comfort zone helps you grow.
Most importantly, remember that it's ok to say no. To the expectations society has about Valentine's day. To having to doll up, put on your high heels and smearing on lipstick. To buying lingerie, to putting it on and then to whatever goes on in your bedroom.
It's ok to not do any of that, if you don't want to. Remember, it's Valentine's day! We spend most of our lives trying to please others, to fit into a societal mould. This Valentine's your most special date should be yourself. And if you're going to rock up in a new bralette and then show it off in all it's glory to someone you love - we say good for you.
But if you're buying a set simply because this Valentine's is all about you, we say...good for you too. There's so many ways to show love and so many people to show it to.
Most importantly, don't forget to show it to yourself :)
Happy Valentine's Day from all of us at the OBC team!
